This essence is to help ground us in situations where shock or similar circumstances might otherwise tend to make us lose the will to live.
There are times in everyone’s life when life can feel to be just not worth living. It may be the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune when everything we touch seems to crumble to disaster. It may be a bad accident where the shock has made us lose touch with reality. Either way the desire to keep on living can desert us and all we want is a cessation of our troubles. In such circumstances we need an essence that will help root us back in the physical world, an essence that will help us feel secure and loved, an essence that will encourage us to put down our own roots once more. This is where Ivy can help.
Ivy mirrors the properties that we are looking for in such circumstances. It can awaken in us its powers of toughness, resilience and power. Ivy is a survivor! If we embrace its powers, then there is no way that it will willingly let us escape into death.
When all may seem lost, when we are distressed or shocked, this is the essence of choice. It was for this reason it was included in our Shock and Trauma composite. Once the shock has lessened, there is a risk of the person becoming detached from reality: he or she may experience a light, floating feeling, of being spaced out, and not wanting to return to ordinary physical existence. Ivy is therefore included for its strong rooted earth quality. It counteracts the airy, detached aspect of the Star of Bethlehem, helping us to root tenaciously into the world whilst remaining detached from the trauma. It brings vital stability to the mind-body system, giving it time to rebalance and adjust to the new situation.
